| This article is the third and final installment in an online series based on interviews with North Korean residents. The previous articles examined North Korean residents¡¯ perceptions of international sanctions against North Korea and changes in their lives under the sanctions regime. This article broadens the analytical focus to the COVID-19 period to examine how an additional external shock affected residents¡¯ lives amid the prolonged sanctions environment. In particular, it focuses on how the same residents experienced and perceived the sanctions period and the COVID-19 period as distinct periods. COVID-19 was a crisis that had a profound impact worldwide, and North Korea was no exception. However, North Korea¡¯s crisis may have unfolded differently due to the country¡¯s strong policy responses, including border closures. |
